    What Exactly are Home Care Services?

    by: Maria Licoudis, R.N. & Care Manager

    Home care services are soaring across all Western countries. Perhaps even more so in Canada than anywhere else. Businesses providing home care services are booming: they offer temporary or permanent companionship and assisting services for individuals who are not quite autonomous anymore. But what does "home care" really mean? What is included with this type of service?

    Definition.

    Home care is provided by a caregiver. It is not a medical service. Caregivers make themselves available to accompany, assist or help their clients in their everyday activities, which they cannot accomplish by themselves anymore.

    What Are the Services Offered?

    There are two main categories of services: the temporary post-hospital services and the permanent and continued services designed to avoid a placement in a specialized institution. In all cases, the tasks of the caregiver can be described as follows:

    • run errands for or with the elder;
    • prepare meals;
    • take care of all household chores (cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, etc.);
    • assist with grooming and dressing;
    • drive the elders to their appointments or their activities;
    • report to the families on a regular basis;
    • plan exercises for both the body and, if required, the mind;
    • ensure medical care and medication are followed adequately;
    • fall prevention & general supervision in the case of cognitive decline.

    Specific to live-in care

    Some people need assistance 24/7. Indeed, they have chosen to stay in their own home instead of moving to a specialized institution. They often suffer from the aftereffect of a stroke, Parkinson's disease, cancer, Alzheimer's or any other invalidating disease. In such cases, it is necessary to be with the patient all the time. It doesn't mean that the caregiver lives with the patient. She goes home after her shift. Another caregiver simply takes over for the next shift.

    This is what Home Care Assistance Montreal, a specialist in the field of home care services in the greater Montreal area, is offering at https://www.homecareassistancemontreal.ca/live-in.html

    In summary, home care services are not limited to monitoring the medication intake following a hospitalization. It is a full-assistance service, resulting in a genuine bond between a patient and a caregiver.
